Hungarians outraged: 2 dl of tap water cost almost 1 EUR near Balaton!
Hungarians say that buying anything at Lake Balaton has become a luxury since the record high Hungarian inflation. Some posted the checks they had to pay in confectioneries near Lake Balaton. According to the photos, somebody had to pay almost 1 EUR for 2 dl of tap water. Meanwhile, another guest paid 5,000 HUF (12.7 EUR) for two middle-sized ice creams.
Due to the high inflation in Hungary, prices have increased everywhere in the country. However, the highest rise is probably at Lake Balaton. For example, a guest had to pay more than 11,000 HUF (28 EUR) for two scoops of ice cream with dressing, two 0.5l mineral water, and a coffee in a Balatonfüred confectionery. The two scoops of ice cream alone cost 5,000 HUF (12.7 EUR), blikk.hu wrote.
If you compare that to the Hungarian average net wage was 276,000 forints in July. That is now 700 EUR because the forint weakened significantly against the euro in the last few months.
Here is how some Hungarians reacted to the prices of the confectionery:
- “This must be a joke”
- “I am sorry to say, but those buying it are dumb”
Others slammed the place for the high service prices, while a woman suggested they do not pay their taxes.
In another confectionery near Lake Balaton, you pay 720 HUF (1.83 EUR) for 4 dl of tap water. Meanwhile, a latte coffee costs 1,790 HUF (4.54 EUR).
Here are some comments:
- “OMG. I give the water for free. Could that not be included in the price of the coffee? I hope you did not give a tip”
- “They may ask 50 HUF for a dl. That would not be so disgusting. But 180 HUF per dl is very much indeed disgusting”
- “You paid 1 m3 of water”
- “Will they ask for money even for taking a breath near the Lake Balaton?”
Blikk wanted to reach the confectionaries, but they did not react. You can check out the invoices in Blikk’s article.
As we reported before, inflation is sky-high in Hungary. Very soon, paying HUF 1000 (EUR 2.51) for one kilogram of bread will be common in Hungary. Bakers are preparing to raise the price of bread and all their other products because the price of energy is rising rapidly alongside that of raw materials.

Its no different worldwide. We got our socks knocked off in Niagara Falls, Canada with the prices. An iced tea is $5.00 plus taxes. A plate of Nachos with a bit of cheese drizzled on it plus 2 beers, came to $75.00 with taxes.
@Anonymous, anyone who eats rubbish like Nachos deserves to be overcharged.
Inflation is everywhere. Our governments in Canada and US telling us the inflation is only 8.7 percent. Cost of everything altogether cost more about 28 percent. You know whose lying.
